Clear Audio for Business Video: A Practical Recording Checklist

Microphone and headphones ready for a recording session

Clear speech starts before the edit. Choose a suitable space, position the microphone for the speaker and listen to a test recording. A sharp picture cannot explain an answer that viewers struggle to hear, and post-production cannot reliably rescue every noisy or distorted recording.

Listen to the location before choosing it

Stand in the intended interview position and listen for air conditioning, refrigerators, traffic, music and voices from adjacent rooms. Clap or speak to notice strong reflections, but judge the actual microphone recording rather than the room alone.

For a Hua Hin outdoor location, check wind and intermittent noise as well as the view. A sheltered area may sound better than an exposed terrace. Keep an alternative location available if conditions change.

Match the microphone and position to the situation

A close, correctly placed microphone often captures more useful speech relative to the room than one far away. The right choice depends on movement, framing, clothing, available equipment and the environment. A lapel microphone can be discreet but needs checking for fabric rub. A boom can keep equipment out of the picture when its position can be maintained.

For several speakers, plan how each voice will be captured and whether separate tracks are needed. For an event, discuss a tested feed from the sound desk and a backup rather than assuming the camera’s distant recording will be sufficient.

Check the complete recording chain

Record normal speech and the loudest likely delivery. Listen through headphones for distortion, dropouts, hum and handling noise. Confirm the correct input is being recorded and that the files play back. Leave appropriate headroom according to the equipment and recording format rather than chasing one universal meter setting.

Check batteries, connectors, storage and any wireless system in the actual space. A moving presenter or clothing change can introduce a problem that a seated test missed. Repeat the check when the setup changes.

Treat the room realistically

Soft furnishings and suitable acoustic treatment can reduce reflections. They do not automatically block outside noise or make a room soundproof. Move away from reflective surfaces where possible, reduce avoidable noise with the venue’s agreement and keep microphones close enough for the intended technique.

Do not disable essential building equipment or compromise comfort just to make a room quiet. If the space cannot support intelligible speech, move the conversation and capture the attractive location as separate supporting footage.

Protect the edit

Record a brief sample of the room’s natural background sound for editing transitions. For important conversations, agree on a backup method and check it is actually recording. Keep files organised by session and speaker where applicable.

Noise reduction and dialogue editing can help, but excessive processing can make speech unnatural. If a crucial line is obscured during the session, record it again while the speaker and setup are available.

Frequently asked questions

Can poor audio always be fixed in editing?

No. Severe clipping, missing words, heavy wind and strong overlapping noise may be impossible to repair cleanly. A monitored test before filming is more reliable.

Do acoustic panels make a room soundproof?

No. Acoustic treatment mainly manages reflections inside a space. Blocking noise entering or leaving the room is a separate problem.
