Podcast Equipment: A Practical Recording Checklist

Microphones, cameras and lighting arranged for a podcast recording at Ananas Video Studio in Hua Hin

Podcast equipment works as a chain: the room, microphone placement, recording device, monitoring and file handling all matter. Start with how many people will speak and where they will sit. A tested system is more useful than a collection of individually impressive products.

Choose microphones for the setup

Check how close each speaker can stay to a microphone and how much movement is expected. Directionality, placement and the room influence the result. The labels dynamic and condenser do not by themselves guarantee rejection of background noise.

Test normal speech, laughter and head movement. Listen for plosives, clothing rub and table noise. Use suitable mounting so people can sit comfortably without holding the microphone.

Count inputs and tracks

Decide whether each voice needs a separate track. Confirm that the recorder or interface has the required inputs and can use them simultaneously in the chosen software. Separate tracks help editing but still require good placement.

USB and XLR describe connection choices, not a simple quality ranking. Check compatibility, power, controls and multi-person recording. Test the complete chain with the actual computer where one is used.

Monitor the recording and the room

Listen through headphones for hum, distortion, interruptions and incorrect inputs. Check recorded playback as well as the live signal. Set levels appropriate to the equipment and allow room for louder moments.

Reduce avoidable noise and strong reflections. Soft furnishings and acoustic treatment can help reflections, but do not automatically soundproof the space. A quieter recording position may help more than a microphone upgrade.

Plan video and remote guests separately

For video, agree on camera views, lighting and audio synchronisation. Check recording duration, power and file sizes for the full conversation. Position microphones without obscuring important expressions or demonstrations.

Remote guests need a test of their microphone, headphones, connection and recording method. Confirm that the production arrangement supports them before the session.

Rehearse a complete session

Record for a duration representative of the episode. Check files are complete, voices are on the intended tracks and the editing system can open them. Practise the transfer and backup routine.

For a Hua Hin studio booking, ask which equipment, operator support and outputs are included. You may not need to own the complete kit if the production arrangement provides it.

Frequently asked questions

Is an XLR microphone always better than USB?

No. Compare the complete system and workflow. Connection type alone does not determine the quality of the finished conversation.

Do I need a microphone for every speaker?

It depends on the format, but individual close microphones can make voices easier to capture and edit. Test the arrangement and confirm the required inputs.
