Drone Filming in Thailand: A Compliance Checklist for Business Owners

Before commissioning drone filming in Thailand, ask the operator to check both their documentation and the specific flight location and date. Owning a drone or having a registration does not by itself establish that a proposed flight can go ahead. This checklist helps a client prepare the project; the operator must verify the applicable requirements with the authorities.

Separate registration from permission to fly

CAAT’s official guidance identifies camera-equipped drones among those requiring registration and directs applicants to the UAS Portal. It also identifies registration with CAAT and NBTC as separate requirements. Do not assume a small camera drone is exempt just because of its weight. See CAAT’s registration guidance.

Ask your proposed operator which pilot and aircraft records apply to the equipment and work, and whether they are current. Ask about insurance and required approvals. Avoid relying on an old registration screenshot or a general assurance that “commercial filming is always allowed.”

If you are bringing your own camera drone to Thailand and want help preparing the paperwork, DroneClear Thailand’s full-service drone registration coordinates the CAAT and NBTC registration workflow for one drone, including document review and arrival-related steps. Insurance is arranged separately, and the pilot must complete the required CAAT exam personally. The service assists with registration; it does not replace the checks and approvals for a particular flight.

For a trip with your own aircraft, see our guide to bringing a drone to Thailand, including insurance checks and choosing the registration support you need.

Check the actual site and date

Send the exact map pin, intended flight area, filming date and alternative dates before adding an aerial sequence to the final brief. The operator should check applicable airspace limits, nearby airports, restricted areas and temporary notices through official channels, including the CAAT UAS Portal.

A flight at a Hua Hin property needs a site-specific assessment. A nearby location where a drone flew previously is not proof that your flight is permitted now. Do not use the maximum altitude printed on a drone specification as the permitted operating height.

Arrange site access and a safe filming plan

Identify who controls the take-off and landing area and who can authorise access. Share guest areas, roads, power lines, neighbouring properties and periods of heavy activity. Ask the operator how they will keep the operation clear of people and handle changes on site.

Property-owner permission and aviation approval address different matters. Filming permission also needs to account for privacy, security and the intended use of footage. Keep unrelated guests and private neighbouring spaces out of promotional coverage where possible.

Make the aerial shots useful and optional

Explain what each shot must communicate: building position, access, landscape or the relationship between facilities. A clear ground-level sequence may explain an entrance or room layout better than a high aerial view.

Agree on an alternative if weather, aircraft conditions or restrictions prevent flying. Options might include rescheduling the aerial portion or completing the film with ground footage. Specify who decides, what work can continue and how the scope would change. Do this before the shoot day.

Questions to send with your enquiry

Provide the location pin, site contact, date options, intended shots and publication channels. Ask who checks the current rules and permissions, which documents can be confirmed before the session, and when the go/no-go decision will be made. Official requirements and temporary restrictions can change; recheck them for the planned operation rather than treating this article as flight authorisation.

Frequently asked questions

Does property-owner permission make a drone flight legal?

No. Site access is only one part of planning. The operator must also check applicable aviation requirements, registration and any restrictions or approvals for the flight.

Can aerial filming always be included in a property video?

No. It depends on permissions, the location, weather and safe operating conditions. Agree on a ground-filming alternative and any rescheduling arrangements.

Discuss your project

Send the location and the aerial views you have in mind. We can discuss their feasibility and how they fit the wider film. Ananas Video Studio offers drone filming in Hua Hin. Contact our team to discuss the details and an individual quotation.
